6. Lovelyweatherforducks– дождливая погода, (как вариант) у природы нет плохой погоды.

Другие варианты: a real toad-strangle; raining cats and dogs; it's coming down in buckets (см. 239).

7. Rome wasn't built in a day– Москва не сразу строилась.

Другие варианты: a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step; slow and steady wins the race; good things come to those who wait; a watched pot never boils.

8.To count on one’s fingers– сосчитать по пальцам.

– You can count it on your fingers. – По пальцам можно/можешь сосчитать.

9. To rub the salt in the wound– сыпать соль на рану.

– Don't rub the salt in the wound. – Не сыпь мне соль на рану.

Другие варианты: to twist the knife in the wound; salt in the wound; don’t get all up in the face; to add insult to injury; to rub it in; to aggravate or to exacerbate.

10. One can do no more than they can– выше головы не прыгнешь.

– What's the use of this case? – Какая польза от этого дела?

13. Are you nuts?– Ты спятил/с ума сошёл?

Другие варианты: Are you crazy/insane/mad (BrE)/out of your mind/deranged? Have you lost your mind? Are you all off your rockers? Are you off of your rocker? Are you bonkers/loco (с испан. сумасшедший); Are you buggin’?

14. What have I got to do?– Что я должен сделать?

Другие варианты: What should I do? What do I do? What do I need to do? What must I do? What do I have to do? What will I do? What am I to do? (это более литературная фраза, но ее можно использовать в неформальной обстановке, чтобы выразить чувство растерянности, не зная, что делать). What am I supposed to do? What's next? What's the next step?

15. No man is an island– один в поле не воин.

Другие варианты: you don’t have to do this alone; we need one another; no one is self-sufficient; everyone relies on others; we're all in this together; even the Lone Ranger had Tonto (юмористическая и хорошо известная американская отсылка к тому факту, что даже у героя-одиночки есть помощник).

16. Why worry her(over nothing)? – Зачем ее беспокоить (по пустякам)?

Другие варианты: Why bother her? Why trouble her? Why add to her troubles? Let her be. Don't burden her. Let her worry about it.

Другие варианты: How can it be? How could this be so? How’s it?

18. To know all the answers– иметь на всё ответ.

– He knows all the answers. – У него на все есть ответ.

Другой вариант: to have all the answers; to have an answer for everything; the know-it-all; the font of all knowledge (это говорит о человеке, обладающем неисчерпаемым запасом информации).

19. Whatmakesyousosure? – Откуда (у тебя/вас) такая уверенность?

20. Howcomethat…? – Как так получается, …

– Hey, how come that bag always has exactly… – Эй, как так получается, что в сумке всегда именно то....

Другие варианты: why (did the project get delayed?); how's that?/how so? (You're leaving early? How's that?"); what’s the reason?

21. Sure you can see that– уверен, что вы это понимаете.

– I'm sure you can see that what is suitable in one context would sound strange in another. – Я уверен, вы понимаете, что то, что подходит в одном контексте, может показаться странным в другом.

23. Tocomealong (phrasalverv/фразовый глагол)– сопровождать, приходить вместе, идти, прийти, пойти, поехать, появиться (sing along – подпевать).

– No need for you to come along. – Вам не надо сопровождать меня.

– Then you came along. – Потом ты появилась.

24. Whatremainstobedone? – Что еще можно сделать? (It remains to be seen. – Ещё предстоит выяснить/Ещё неизвестно).

25. Make/express yourself clear– выражайтесь яснее.

Другие варианты: you have to be too clear about it; be clear(er); ask more clearly; speak too plain/plainly; be explicit; be more articulate/specific; be lucid; be as explicit as you can; make your point; get your point across.

Американские варианты: pissed off; mad annoyed; teed off; bummed out; bent out of shape; hopping mad; fed up.

44. Totumblesomething– дорубиться до чего-то.

– I couldn't even tumble it–я даже не смог догадаться.

Другие варианты: I wasn't even smart enough to figure out; I hadn't thought that far; I didn't put that together; I wouldn’t ever guess; I’d not have been any the wiser.
