Именно в ней ее показатели, насколько это возможно, приведены в данной книге. Она отличается от более старой и привычной шкалы Рихтера, для градуировки которой использовались локальные магнитуды. Сейсмический момент пропорционален подвижке по разрыву (смещению вдоль разлома), умноженной на площадь смещающейся поверхности разлома. Это более подходящая мера для очень крупных землетрясений.
