But it was true that Tilford needed a master, for peace had not been restored between the abbey and the manor house, and the monks found one pretext or another to cut off another piece of their neighbors' land. On the other bank of the winding river, above the green meadows, rose the heavy square tower and the mighty gray walls of the gloomy abbey, where the bell rang day and night, as if incessantly threatening the small estate.
And this chronicle of bygone days must begin in the very heart of the rich Cistercian monastery: И эта хроника дней былых должна начаться в самом сердце богатого Цистерианского монастыря: we will tell of the feud between the monks and the House of Loring, the events to which it led, we will describe the arrival of Chandos, the unprecedented duel at Tilford Bridge and the exploits of Nigel in the war that earned him fame. The chronicle of the "White Company" has already described what kind of man Nigel Loring was. Those who liked him can read here how and why he became such. Let us go back together and survey the green stage of England. The scenery - hill, plain, river - is just as it is today, but the actors are in many ways indistinguishable from ourselves, and in many ways in thoughts and actions so far from us, as if they lived on another planet.
Chapter II How the Devil Came to Waverley
The day was the first of May, the day of the holy apostles James and Philip. And the year was one thousand three hundred and forty-nine from the birth of our Savior.
After nine o'clock prayers until noon, and then after noon prayers until three o'clock, Abbot John, abbot of Waverley, was busy in his parlor, performing the laborious duties that came with his office. For many miles around, to the south and north, to the west and east, stretched the fertile lands of the flourishing monastery, of which he was the sovereign master. In their very heart rose the massive buildings of the abbey - the church and cells, the refectory, the hospice and the chapter house, full of bustling life. Through the open windows one could hear the muffled voices of the brothers, who walked along the arcade below, engaged in pious conversation. From across the courtyard came the murmur of spiritual chant - there the choirmaster was practicing it with the choir, and a loud Brother Peter's voice rang out in the chapter house as he explained the Rule of Saint Bernard to the novices.
Abbot John rose to stretch his stiff legs. He looked around at the green grass and the graceful Gothic arches of the open gallery, under which the brothers were strolling. Dressed in black and white robes, with bowed heads, they walked slowly in pairs around the circle. The more diligent ones brought their manuscripts from the scriptorium, laid out their tablets with paints and gold leaf in the gentle sun and, hunched shoulders, bent over white sheets of paper. And nearby the embosser was located with his chisels. Although learning and the arts were not held in the same honor among the Cistercians as among the Bernardine order from which they emerged, the Waverley library could boast of many priceless books and pious zealots of the book wisdom.
However, the Cistercians saw their true glory in their work in the open air, and along the gallery, returning from the fields or from the garden, every now and then the brother workers passed, whose faces were burnt by the sun, their cassocks tucked up, and whose hands clutched hoes or shovels stained with earth.
Lush floodplain meadows where fine-wool sheep grazed, fields of grain reclaimed from heather and bracken, vineyards on the southern slope of Crooksbury Hill, a chain of fishponds, a drained marsh converted into vegetable gardens, spacious dovecotes surrounded the stately abbey, as visible evidence of the diligence of its inhabitants.
The abbot's round, ruddy face, as he surveyed his impressive estate, glowed with quiet contentment - such exemplary order reigned everywhere. Like any head of a rich monastery, Abbot John - the fourth abbot to bear this name - was endowed with many talents and virtues. Through the help of assistants chosen by himself, he managed the vast estate and kept the numerous inhabitants of the monastery, who had retired there from the temptations of life, in severity and decorum. With those who were subordinate to him, he was a stern and demanding boss, but with those who stood above him, he was a clever and courteous diplomat. He conducted learned conversations with neighboring abbots and lords, with bishops and papal legates, and sometimes with His Majesty the King. He had to understand a wide variety of subjects - after all, he had to to make decisions on questions of church doctrine, and on matters of agriculture, architecture, forest protection, drainage of swamps and observance of feudal law. He personified justice in all the holdings of the abbey, which covered a large part of Hampshire and Surrey. His displeasure threatened monks with long penance, exile to a stricter monastery or even prison and chains. And he could subject the laity to any punishment except physical death, but he had the power to excommunicate them from the church, that is, condemn them to spiritual death, which is much more terrible.
Such was the power of the abbot, and it is not surprising that his ruddy face bore the stamp of authority and that the monks, raising their eyes and seeing this face in the window, lowered their eyes even more humbly, and their expression became even more pious.
A knock at the door reminded the abbot of his immediate concerns, and he returned to his desk. He had already conversed that day with the cellarer and coadjutor, with the almoner, the chaplain, and the reader, but now, in response to his permission, a tall, thin monk entered the door, the most important and most trusted of his assistants, Brother Samuel, the sacristan, whose duties in the world corresponded to those of a steward, so that the material well-being of the monastery and its relations with the vain world were entirely under his control. In everything that concerned them, he acted at his own discretion, answering only to the abbot. Brother Samuel was a wiry old man with gnarled hands, the sharp features of his gloomy face were not illuminated by spiritual light and reflected only the eternal preoccupation with vain worldly affairs and troubles. Under his arm he carried a thick account book, and in his other hand he clutched a heavy bunch of keys - a sign of his office, and also, in moments of irritation, an instrument of punishment, as evidenced by the scars on the heads of many of the villains and laboring brothers.
The abbot sighed wearily, because he too had to endure a lot of torment from his zealous manager.
“So what brought you here, Brother Samuel?”
- Holy Father, I have come to report that I have sold wool to Master Baldwin in Winchester for two shillings a bale more than last year, because the price has risen due to the death of the sheep.
- You have done commendably, Brother Samuel. -
- I must also report to you that I have evicted the forester Wat from his house. He has not paid the Christmas rent and last year's arrears for chickens.
- He, brother Samuel, has a wife and four children. The abbot was a good-natured man, although easily
yielded to the insistence of his not so soft-hearted key keeper.
- It is truly so, holy father. But if I let him off the hook, how can I collect the arrears from the foresters of Puttenham or the villeins in the villages? Such leniency will immediately be known everywhere, and what will then remain of the wealth of Waverley?
- What else, brother Samuel? -
- Fish cages, holy father. -
The abbot's face brightened. He was an expert in this matter. The order's charter denied him many of life's joys, and therefore he greatly valued those that were permitted.
- How are the trout, Brother Samuel? -
- The trout are thriving, holy father. But in the fishpond where the fish for your table are kept, there is not a single carp left.
