Once upon a time, a girl had a cat named Mario. He was tiger-striped, gray, a Scottish Fold by breed. She got him by chance — his previous owner developed an allergy to fur and gave him to the girl. She still remembers how he appeared in their family: he climbed out of the box and, with a masterly air, began inspecting everything around. He wasn’t afraid of anything at all. Gradually, Mario got used to his new family and home.

Mario loved eating meat most of all and licking butter off the table when no one was looking. He didn’t make friends with mice or birds — that wasn’t a royal thing to do. Yet he was a good hunter: he caught mice, brought them to the doorstep, and proudly showed off his catch. His owners were delighted, showered him with affection, and fed him tasty treats — sausage and cutlets. A hedgehog heard about Mario and his mouse hunts. Mario himself didn’t eat the mice; he didn’t like that kind of food. So the hedgehog came and ate them, and Mario watched approvingly. He liked being useful.
