Fitch’s Paradox
THE ALL-KNOWING TRAP
Fitch’s Paradox disrupts the comforting idea that all truths can, at least in principle, be known. At first glance it seems harmless to claim that anything true could be discovered eventually. Yet, when this assumption is pushed through the machinery of logic, it creates a strange and unsettling result: if all truths are knowable, then we must already know them all. In other words, the claim collapses into omniscience — a state that clearly does not match our experience.

Imagine a world in which every true statement could, at least theoretically, be learned by someone, somewhere, someday. Fitch’s Paradox begins with this knowability principle. Now consider the statement, “There exists an unknown truth.” If it’s true, then it must be knowable. But if we can know it, then the truth in question would no longer be unknown, which contradicts our starting point. The logic traps us: the only consistent way to uphold the principle is to deny the possibility of any unknown truth, which amounts to claiming complete, universal knowledge.
The paradox hinges on two premises. First, all truths are knowable. Second, knowledge is a justified true belief: something is known if it is true, believed, and backed by good reasons. The problem is that when the first premise is applied to the statement about an unknown truth, the reasoning folds back on itself. Instead of revealing new knowledge, it dismantles the original assumption.

The Knower Paradox throws a wrench into our ideas about knowledge and self-reference. Consider the statement: “This sentence is not known.” If it’s true, then by the very act of being understood, it becomes known, contradicting itself. If it’s false, then it’s known to be false, which is itself a form of knowing. We’re left with a loop that refuses to resolve cleanly. This puzzle isn’t just wordplay — it digs into the core of how we think about truth, knowledge, and the limits of language to capture them.

The Paradox of Inquiry asks: how can we even begin to search for something if we don’t know what it is we’re looking for? If you know nothing about the subject, how do you start? If you already know the answer, is it even inquiry anymore? This problem forces us to think deeply about how curiosity works and how our assumptions shape the way we learn.
Imagine a scientist facing a brand-new disease. They have no clear picture of its cause or symptoms. Yet they begin — taking notes, asking questions, observing patterns. Little by little, they piece together the puzzle. The paradox doesn’t stop them; it’s actually what makes the process exciting.
The Paradox Explained
The tension lies between two extremes. On one side, complete ignorance seems like a dead end: no hints, no starting point, no way forward. On the other, having a fixed answer in mind makes us blind to possibilities we didn’t expect. In real inquiry, we live somewhere in between, starting with partial guesses, loose hunches, or provisional theories — and letting them evolve as we learn.
