PULLING YOURSELF UP BY YOUR TEMPORAL BOOTSTRAPS

Imagine sending a message back in time that inspires the creation of the very time machine used to send that message in the first place. The message has no clear origin, existing in a perfect loop of cause and effect. This is the Bootstrap Paradox, one of the strangest puzzles in time travel theory. It forces us to question not only the flow of time, but the very nature of causality itself. It’s a thought experiment that can turn a casual conversation into a heated late-night debate.

The Bootstrap Paradox is also known as the Ontological Paradox. It deals with closed causal loops: an event in the future causes an event in the past, which in turn causes the future event. FREE WILL OR FATE’S FICKLE FINGER?

The paradox begins with a simple disjunction: either A or B. In our example, either you go for a walk (A) or you stay home (B). From this, modal logic says we can also assert that both outcomes are possible — “It is possible that I go for a walk” and “It is possible that I stay home.”

Now here’s the twist: add a modal counterfactual such as, “If I had decided differently, it would not be the case that I am going for a walk” (or the reverse for staying home). When you combine these statements, it suddenly looks as though the unchosen option was never truly possible in the first place. Whichever choice you make, the other dissolves from the realm of possibility. This creates an unsettling implication: maybe your choice was never open at all, and your sense of freedom is an illusion.
