Introduction. Max's Childhood and Life

Long ago, about twenty-six years ago, before crabs roamed and villains ruled the world, a momentous day arrived for all of humanity. A brave hero entered this world — one who would always stand his ground, never yielding to a giant or anyone who sought to destroy him.

Max was a true hero, yet ironically, he was the very reason all the villains appeared. In those distant days, when his parents were still young feline visionaries, there lived a sorcerer whose power was unbeatable. His eyes burned with a scarlet-red glow, piercing to the very core of your soul. They radiated a fury so intense that he had no kindness left in his heart.

Nobody knew the root of his anger or why he destroyed entire cities and nations. The world was plunged into a time of deep darkness and cruelty. Whenever HE appeared, people locked themselves away. Those left outside received no help — society had become completely indifferent, seemingly numb to the bone. A deafening silence reigned in the streets.

Max's future parents were just young cats back then, but they wanted to make a difference. Even as animals in a world of humans, they dreamed of conveying a vital message: you cannot give in to blind panic, or the world will be lost forever. Only by standing shoulder to shoulder could everyone hope for salvation from this relentless evil.

They rushed out, climbed a tower, and addressed the entire city. The people, inspired by the courage of these two small cats, rallied together, even summoning other wizards to banish the evil sorcerer once and for all. And so, Max's parents saved the world.

Years rolled by. The fateful day arrived when Max was born. The banished sorcerer held a bitter grudge, vowing to take his revenge on both the child and his parents. Max grew at an astonishing pace. He solved complex puzzles effortlessly and was far ahead of his peers in kindergarten — yet he often felt the sting of being different, as he and his family were the only cats in a society of humans.

Because of this, he was mocked and even bullied. But Max refused to let it break his spirit. He focused on his goals and strove for success. Days, months, and years slipped by in a flash. He turned five.

Max's father worked at a renowned Eastern cuisine restaurant, making a name for himself as a top-tier chef. His mother was a manager at a hotel widely known as "The Best of Premium." Peace reigned supreme because around that time, a little girl inherited a mystical stone. When she turned three, the artifact stripped everyone of their superpowers, and the villains simply disappeared. The world became a safe haven. People no longer lived in constant dread — goodness had returned to the realm.

Max was getting ready for school, tackling math problems, and diving deep into chess. When he officially enrolled in the first grade, his parents went out to stock up on school supplies. Max was waiting at home, glued to the TV watching chess strategies, when suddenly, the doorbell chimed.

He recalled his mother's strict warning never to open the door for strangers. Being just a small cat, Max quickly grabbed a wooden stool, climbed onto it, and peeked through the peephole. But out of the blue, the door was kicked open. The impact struck him hard, and he lost consciousness. He woke up inside a cage at a desolate farm.

"Are you comfortable, my dear little kitty?" asked the farmer, a man named Kay.

"Where am I? Where are my parents? I demand you return me to them!" Max screamed. He struggled to take off the handcuffs, but without success.

"This is where you'll spend your final moments on earth," Kay chuckled menacingly.

"No! My parents will track me down and destroy you!" Max fiercely replied.

"How on earth will they find you when we're in a completely different city?" Kay smirked. "Go ahead, ask your final question."

"How many days have passed since you took me?"

"Three days," Kay answered, baffled.

Right then, Max caught sight of a blinking tracker on his pants — a clever device his parents had hidden there. Suddenly, the door was smashed open, and his cat parents stormed into the room. They swiftly freed Max. Kay gave up — the odds were against him. All the captive animals ran away, leaving the farmer empty-handed. But Kay swore revenge.

The family relocated to another city, close to that very farm — they had no choice, as it was the only place they could afford. Max tried to return to normal life and was excelling in school. But one day, while on a family walk, a massive net dropped from above. It was Kay again. He ruthlessly knocked the parents out and abducted Max once more.

After four agonizing years in captivity, when Max turned ten, he made a daring escape from the farm and finally made it back home. Life settled into a routine. Superpowers were dismissed as fairy tales. But in the seventh grade, at the age of thirteen, his world turned upside down. A girl named Abby arrived with a magical emerald stone, fleeing from villains. Max welcomed her in, but chaos erupted — crabs swarmed the house. The house was reduced to ruins, and the stone was snatched away. A crab stomped on the artifact, sending a shockwave that restored magic to the world but wiped his parents' memories of the event.

Max’s family was forced into poverty, staying at a two-star motel. Max trained to endure hunger and worked hard to help his parents buy a car and a modest house. He dropped out of school for a few years to work, but thanks to his brilliant mind, he returned at sixteen to graduate early. He spent the next four years working day and night to save money, and finally enrolled in university at twenty, dreaming of becoming a doctor.

One day, at twenty-five, exhausted after a long shift, he dreamt of vibrant, delicious pastries. Upon waking, he went to find them. He saw a sign that read "Cake" and stepped inside.

It wasn't a bakery. It was a zoo. (Whoever named that zoo definitely had a cruel sense of humor, or just really liked deceiving hungry doctors). And that is where he met Rico and Zebra, beginning the journey that would change the world forever.

Prologue. A Hundred Thousand Centuries Ago

In the ancient times before the dinosaurs ruled the entire world, chaos reigned. But once the mighty Dinosaur—the strongest and most invincible—became king, the realm finally found peace. He possessed a special power: he could live forever. With this magical ability, he had ruled for thousands of years.

Then, at dawn, a great contest took place. Two tyrannosaurs—the strongest of all their kind—clashed in a fierce duel. They fought furiously for hours, perhaps even days, until a T-Rex named Richie defeated his opponent. Half the spectators roared in triumph, while the rest watched in stunned silence.

Among the unhappy ones was a Little Dinosaur who had always stood on the side of evil. Seeing the defeat of the one he supported, he flew into a rage. At the exact moment the fight ended, a scarlet bolt of lightning struck the arena. From it emerged other powerful beasts—as evil as the Little Dinosaur—and they submitted to him.

Once, these creatures had been heroes, but with the strike of lightning, their goodness was pushed to the very depths of their souls. The entire world was on the brink of destruction. The evil spirit of the Little Dinosaur entered the king, making him even stronger. The true king was defeated deep within his own soul.

Now the corrupted giants ruled the world, and everything depended solely on their dark will. The new king made it a law that no one would ever utter the word "Dinosaur" again. Only the wizards still tried to resist, but their powers were weak.

Sometime later, the wizards found a handful of emerald stones that glowed with light even in darkness. From pieces of this mystical stone, they created a powerful weapon and used it to imprison the ancient rulers in the Cage of Time. But it could not hold them forever. Someday, they would return—stronger and more dangerous than before.

Understanding that keeping the weapon whole was dangerous, the wizards split it into two parts. Even standing near them, one could feel powerful and unimaginably strong magic. One wizard took the second fragment to a place unknown, while another set off to hide the first fragment in the scorching core of the Earth. The air there melted from the heat, as if on the surface of the sun. The wizard protected himself with an ice force field that dispersed the fire, but the heat was still almost unbearable.

Penetrating the heart of the Earth, he found a secret passage, hid the stone there, and spoke, "Evil shall not enter here. Only a kind soul will be able to pass all the trials and receive this power."

He left a guardian by the stone—a brave warrior who would not let the artifact fall into the hands of villains. After that, the wizard returned to his order, hoping that his deed would protect the world.

But he knew the ancient evil would return. Then, without warning, the most powerful dark sorcerer named Mordoorak attacked the wizards. He destroyed everyone except one, who barely managed to escape.

In a hundred million years, the Cage of Time would open, and unstoppable chaos would begin. The surviving wizard understood that he had to leave a warning for future generations: an invincible army was approaching the world. The countdown had begun.

Chapter 1. Superdog

A year had passed since the heroes defeated the crabs. Rico was on a mission to wipe out the remnants of the "Crab Empire," patrolling the nearby sectors. Meanwhile, Max was making his way to Jayme's place to enjoy some cake together. In the wake of the recent chaos, the world had changed drastically, and the heroes had evolved as well. Over the past year, Max had been working tirelessly at Jayme's, and his fur had turned gray from the strain. Rico had fully mastered his newfound abilities and turned blue — his green feathers had shifted hue due to the constant use of shockwaves. Jayme was in high spirits today, as a new shipment of magical animals was expected to be delivered.

He and Max savored the cake while waiting for the delivery. Before long, the animals arrived, but to their surprise, the only newcomer was a small dog. She was unable to speak and, at first glance, seemed to possess no magical traits. Her name was Superdog.

Max and Jayme placed the dog in a cage and went back to their tea. But without warning, a hidden crab device planted on the wall began to glow, and a mysterious button appeared! Before anyone could react, the dog broke out of her cage with supernatural strength and slammed the button.

A deafening explosion rocked the building! Flames began to engulf the structure. Superdog turned on the heroes, her eyes glowing red. They managed to stay out of harm's way for a moment, but she still managed to land a sharp bite on Jayme’s arm. It was clear as day that someone was pulling her strings. Max dashed to safety, and Jayme hurled a table at her, but she burned right through it with her laser-like gaze. Then, she conjured a massive icicle that brought the entire room crashing down.

The heroes sprinted outside just as the ceiling collapsed. Max focused his mind, channeling all his telepathic energy to stop the rampage. The dog was flung into the air, hit the ground with a heavy thud, and lay still.

Rico, who had been patrolling just a few blocks away, arrived on the scene within seconds, his blue feathers glowing with residual energy.

"Max, I’m here. I’m heading into the building!" he shouted over the roar of the flames.

"Okay!" Max replied, keeping his guard up.

"What on earth happened here?" Rico asked, scanning the smoking ruins.

"It seems the dog has a malicious side," Jayme explained, clutching his wounded arm.

The dog snapped awake, her movements forced and robotic, and bolted at breakneck speed. Rico reacted instantly, using a quick blue shockwave to pin her down just long enough to reach her. He sensed her mind was being tampered with. Spotting a tiny microchip marked with the crab symbol embedded in her neck, he swiftly tore it away. Instantly, the red glow in her eyes vanished, and her true consciousness returned.

"Hello everyone, I’m Superdog," she said, her voice trembling.

"How did you come by so many powers? And why were you acting so hostile?" Jayme asked.

"It all started two days ago," Superdog began. "The crabs caught wind of my special abilities and decided to get even for the defeat of their ruler, Villain. While I was being transported to Jayme, the crabs ambushed the truck. They threw us all into cages and started controlling my mind with that microchip."

"Their base is just a stone's throw away; the chip's residual data says we can be there in two minutes," she added urgently.

"I’m coming with you. We need to end this," said Jayme.

They set off for the base, which turned out to be a familiar location from their past. Inside, they stumbled upon a new crab laboratory. A fierce battle broke out. Rico sent enemies flying with his signature shockwaves, Max took them down with his laser blaster, and Jayme fought gallantly with his sword, slicing through their defenses.

Superdog spotted their leader and lunged toward him, but she fell straight into a trap. Tossed aside, she crashed into a post near where other captive animals were being held. After setting them free and seeing the fire in their eyes, she jumped back into the fray.

The enemies were soon defeated, but their leader managed to slip away at the last second. The heroes headed home with their new allies in tow. Max, sensing the courage of the rescued animals during the fight, looked at them with respect.

"What are your names?" Jayme inquired.

"I’m Hippo," replied the rhino.

"And I’m Ben," said the second rhino, his brother.

"Well, I’m Superdog," the dog added.

"Excellent! You’ve proven your worth. You’re officially part of the team!" Max announced.

Everyone was in a celebratory mood, without a care in the world. Meanwhile, in a far-off location, the crab leader asked:

"Why are they so jubilant when, in two days' time, the ones this world cannot withstand will return?"

"Let them have their fun. While they celebrate, we will strike," his assistant laughed ominously.

Chapter 2. Attack of the Crabs

The friends were celebrating, suspecting nothing. It felt as though a normal life had finally begun. Of course, after the defeat of the original Crab Empire, only three stragglers had remained, but now, in just one year, their numbers had swelled to a hundred. At this rate, the empire itself was bound to make a comeback.

"I want to congratulate everyone on our victory over the crabs!" Max announced. "We fought them for so long, but the struggle actually brought us together. If it weren't for the crabs, we never would have crossed paths. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't have become as strong as we are today."

"True, we’ve poured so much effort into this," Rico added. "Max, we aren't planning on going anywhere, are we?"

"No, why do you ask?" Max said, looking surprised.

"I just really want to find my parents. They are in the Forest of Darkness. We are still heading there, right?" Rico clarified.

Suddenly, the sound of shattering glass echoed through the room — a swarm of crabs burst into the house. These were the last of their kind... or so it seemed. Their leader was among them. The heroes immediately joined the battle.

"We must wipe out the crabs once and for all!" Max shouted, charging after them.

The crabs retreated down a stairway to make their escape.

"After them!" Rico cried, soaring into the air.

They sprinted outside and froze in their tracks: looming before them was a gargantuan robot-crab, laying waste to the city.

"Ha-ha! The hour has come for you heroes to meet your downfall!" the leader laughed mockingly.

Rico struck the machine with a shockwave, but the robot deflected the blow, sending Rico crashing hard to the ground.

"Are you alright?" Max asked, rushing to help him up.

"Yeah, it just reflected the attack," Rico muttered, frowning.

Max attempted to fire a laser, but the robot reflected the beam yet again.

"It’s invulnerable!" Max realized.

"On the outside, yes. But it has a chink in its armor," Rico explained. "Its hull is reinforced with reflective metal, but the internal processors are its weak point. We need to find a way inside."

They swiftly assigned roles: Max and Zebra provided a distraction from the right, Ben and Hippo attacked from the left, while Jayme and Devin took the front. Meanwhile, Rico, Abby, and Superdog moved to scout for an entrance.

The battle was grueling. The heroes had to dodge their own attacks as they bounced off the robot’s hide. Jayme and Devin, noticing a massive pile of rocks, used them to create a distracting "meteor shower."

Under the cover of the chaos, Rico, Abby, and Superdog crept behind the machine. They reached the hatch and, after bypassing several gravity traps, managed to slip inside. Once there, they crippled one of the machine’s "nerve systems," disabling its arm, and cornered the leader hiding in the cockpit.

But the villain was one step ahead — he triggered a self-destruct sequence. Only seconds remained on the timer. Rico and Superdog grabbed Abby and made a break for it, leaping clear at the very last second.

As the leader made his escape on a plane, he shouted:

"See you in the Forest of Darkness!"

The friends gathered together among the ruins.

"Now, it’s time for the Forest of Darkness," Max said firmly.

Chapter 3. Journey to the Forest of Darkness

Every single day, Rico’s thoughts drifted back to his parents. His only lingering memory was that he had once lived in the Forest of Darkness. He felt an overwhelming urge to return to that mysterious place and reunite with them. He had been there only once — at least, that was all he could recall. But a troubling question haunted him: why was this forest his only childhood memory? And where had his parents and everyone else vanished to?

Max’s voice suddenly pulled Rico out of his deep trance.

"Rico, it’s time. We need to head to the Forest of Darkness," Max announced firmly.

"But where exactly is this forest located?" Zebra asked, sounding skeptical.

"Rico will be our guide," Max replied confidently.

"I certainly hope he knows the way."

They began their journey. They realized that going on foot would take forever, so they made their way to Jayme’s car and drove off.

"Zebra, do you remember what landmarks were near the Forest of Darkness?" Max asked while driving.

"There was a vast swamp and a tropical jungle," Zebra answered.

"What kind of swamp are we talking about? There are only three in this entire country."

"Well, a big one... swamp-colored," Zebra said vaguely.

"Ha! Every swamp is 'swamp-colored' except for this one!" Max laughed. "I don't know much about that place either."

Max then turned to Rico, asking if he knew the precise location. Rico sat in the passenger seat in total silence, lost in thought again. Suddenly, he snapped out of it.

"I’m not entirely sure, but we can use logic," Rico said. "There’s a swamp near the city where construction is underway, so it can’t be that one. There’s a second one being drained and studied — that’s not it either. But the third one... the most distant and unexplored... that must be where the Forest of Darkness lies."

"Brilliant, Rico!" Max said, visibly pleased.

Ten hours passed. By eleven o'clock at night, everyone was starving. Rico, Zebra, and Max pulled over, took out their dinner, and started eating. They still had a six-hour drive ahead of them, and their food supplies were dwindling fast. Eventually, exhaustion took over and they all fell asleep. Upon waking, they pushed forward. With only an hour left in the journey, they reached a massive cliff. On the far side, they could see the swamp and the edge of the Forest of Darkness.

"How on earth are we supposed to cross this?" Rico asked, staring into the abyss.

The chasm was staggering. Even though Rico possessed the gift of flight, he wouldn't be able to carry everyone across. Looking to the right, they spotted a metro station. This particular train was legendary — it could cross any obstacle, even a cliff this deep. They reached the station on foot, but they lacked tickets, which could only be bought back at the other swamp. They pleaded with the staff, but were turned away. Just then, a guard approached. He had a well-known weakness for brain-teasers. An idea struck Max.

"If we can solve your most difficult riddles, will you let us ride the metro without tickets?" Max proposed.

The guard stroked his chin and agreed.

"I’ll give you five riddles. If you fail, you’ll never set foot on this train. But if you solve them, you’ll earn VIP seats for life!"

"First riddle: What is the sum of one, plus two, plus three, plus four... all the way to ten?"

Rico, who was naturally gifted at mathematics, crunched the numbers in his head. "Fifty-five," he said confidently.

"Correct."

"Second riddle: The more you take away from it, the larger it grows. What is it?"

Max smiled; he loved this one. "The answer is a hole."

"Right again."

"Third riddle: If you add two to eleven and get one, then what do you get when you add five to nine?"

Max and Zebra were stumped. "There has to be a pattern!" Rico muttered. Suddenly, an announcement echoed through the station: the train to the Forest of Darkness would depart in two hours. The clock on the wall showed eleven.

"Wait, that's it!" Rico exclaimed. "It’s eleven now, and in two hours, it will be one o'clock! This riddle is about time! So the answer is two."

"Impressive!" the guard admitted.

"Fourth riddle: Name it, and it vanishes instantly."

"Silence," Zebra answered without hesitation.

"You’re on a roll. Can you handle the final one? What do you do when you see a green man?"

"But there’s no such thing as a green man," Max whispered to himself. The heroes brainstormed several ideas, but nothing fit. Finally, the guard offered a hint: "You see him on the road."
