What do the colors of the national flag mean? The white color of the Bulgarian flag symbolizes the people’s aspiration for peace, freedom, humanism, and the purity of their ideals. The green color represents the beauty, eternal youth, and fertility of Bulgarian land, its fields and forests, as well as hope for the future; the red – the centuries-long struggle for freedom and independence, the blood shed to achieve them, the fighting spirit, courage, and resilience of the people. Why can the design of the coat of arms change over time? The coat of arms of Bulgaria is a shield crowned with a crown; on the shield is a rampant crowned golden lion. The shield is supported by two golden crowned lions. Below the shield are oak branches and a ribbon with the motto “Съединението прави силата” (Unity makes strength). It is believed that the three lions represent the three historical lands of Bulgaria: Moesia, Thrace, and Macedonia. Bulgaria and Bulgharia: how did Bulgarian kingdoms end up so far from each other? Bulgaria as a state on the Balkan Peninsula was created in the 7th century, when a Turkic group led by Khan Asparuh (680—700) united with the descendants of the Thracians, as well as with Slavic tribes, subjugating the latter two on the territory of present-day Bulgaria. Having mixed with the Slavic tribes living in the territory of present-day Bulgaria, the Turkic Bulgars gave the name to both the country and the people.
