Why are double-headed eagles on the coat of arms replaced by a single-headed symbol of state power? The Slovak coat of arms does not depict an eagle, but a cross, which has been used since the 9th century in Byzantium and was brought to Slovakia by Cyril and Methodius. The three mountains symbolize Matra, Tatra and Fatra – an area long inhabited by Slovaks.
