Amazing Madagascar. A Kaleidoscope of Questions. General Information

Madagascar General 1

The island of Madagascar, located between India and Africa, is a fragment of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana and the fourth largest island in the world. Madagascar broke away from Africa more than 250 million years ago, so most of its flora and fauna are endemic – they cannot be found anywhere else in the world. This state has no land borders with other countries. Madagascar’s neighbors do not include…

1. Mauritius

2. Seychelles

3. Ecuador

4. Comoros Islands

Madagascar General 2

The flag of Madagascar is a rectangular cloth with two horizontal stripes of red and green. A white vertical stripe is located near the hoist. The red and white colors are the colors of the Merina people. The green color belongs to the Hova tribe. The flag of Madagascar resembles the flag of the state of…

2. Republic of Tatarstan

3. Italy

4. Republic of Belarus

The coat of arms of Madagascar is a yellow disk. In the center is a contour map of the island with the two islands Glorieuses and Tromelin, the head of a zebu, and green and red rays symbolizing the sun.

Along the edges of the coat of arms of Madagascar there are inscriptions in the Malagasy language. The inscription above translates as «Republic of Madagascar,» and the inscription below «TANINDRAZANA – FAHAFAHANA – FANDROSOANA» – …

Madagascar General 4

The island was named by the famous Venetian traveler Marco Polo. In his notes the name Madageiscar is mentioned, but it does not refer to the island; it is a distorted transliteration of the name of the Somali port Mogadishu, with which Polo confused the island. The natives called Madagascar «Nossi-Ndambo» (Island of Boars), the islanders – «Tani-be» (Big Land), the Portuguese – «Island of Saint Lawrence.» Why did the Arabs call Madagascar «Jeziret-el-Komr» (Moon Land)?
