Peter Pan and Wendy. Адаптированная книга Pre-Intermediate (A2)
Peter stopped and listened. «Do you want tea first or an adventure?» he asked.
«Tea!» Wendy said quickly.
«Adventure!» John replied, trying to be brave.
«There’s a pirate down there,» Peter whispered. «He’s asleep. Shall we wake him and fight?»
John hesitated. «What if he wakes up angry?»
«I always wake them before fighting,» Peter said proudly. «It’s more fun that way.»
The children asked about the pirates. «Who’s their captain?» John asked.
«Hook,» Peter said darkly.
«Captain Hook?» Wendy whispered.
«Yes,» Peter said. His eyes sparkled, and his voice became serious. «If we meet him, leave him to me.»
They flew lower. Suddenly, a loud BOOM shook the air. «What was that?» Michael cried.
«The pirates are shooting at us!» Peter shouted.
The children scattered. Wendy was blown upwards with only Tinker Bell for company. But Tinker Bell wasn’t friendly. She flew around Wendy, pretending to help, but she was full of jealousy.
«Follow me,» Tink’s tiny light seemed to say.
Wendy followed, calling for Peter, John, and Michael. But no one answered. Wendy didn’t know Tinker Bell was leading her into danger.

How do Peter, Wendy, John, and Michael find food while flying to Neverland? Do you think this is a good way to eat? Why or why not?
What happens when the children get sleepy while flying? How does Peter help them?
Why does Peter forget Wendy, John, and Michael sometimes? How do they remind him?
What do the children see when they first arrive near Neverland? How does the island change as they get closer?
Why is Tinker Bell not friendly to Wendy, and where does she lead Wendy at the end?

Chapter V: The Island Comes to Life
When Peter Pan comes back to the island, everything wakes up. While he’s away, the Neverland is quiet. The fairies sleep longer, the animals take care of their babies, and the pirates and Lost Boys only make faces at each other. But when Peter is near, the whole island is full of energy.
Tonight, the island is busy. The Lost Boys are looking for Peter, the pirates are hunting the boys, the redskins are chasing the pirates, and the animals are after the redskins. They all move in circles, never meeting because they move at the same speed.
The Lost Boys are not thinking about fighting tonight. They are eager to see Peter. There are six boys, counting the twins as two. Let’s watch them quietly as they move through the forest.
The boys wear bear-skin clothes they made themselves. They are round and fluffy, and when they fall, they roll like balls. They walk carefully and hold daggers in their hands.
First comes Tootles, the bravest but also the unluckiest boy. He often misses the big adventures. If he goes to collect wood, something exciting happens while he’s gone. This makes him sad, but it also makes him kind. Poor Tootles doesn’t know that Tinker Bell is looking for trouble tonight and may trick him.
Next is Nibs, cheerful and bold. Slightly comes after him, always whistling tunes he makes up. Slightly thinks he remembers life before the island, so he acts like he knows everything.
Then comes Curly, who is always in trouble. When Peter asks, «Who did this?» Curly steps forward automatically, guilty or not.
Finally, there are the Twins. No one can tell them apart. Even Peter doesn’t understand what twins are, so they stay close together and try not to cause confusion.
After the boys, the pirates march through the woods. You can hear their scary song before you see them:
«Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life,
A treasure chest and sword so bright!»
The pirates are a frightening crew. Cecco, the handsome Italian, listens for danger. Bill Jukes has tattoos all over his body. Smee, the friendly pirate, has funny names for his weapons. But the most terrifying is their captain, James Hook.
Hook rides in a cart pushed by his men. He is tall and pale, with black curly hair and cold blue eyes. His iron hook replaces his right hand. He is polite but deadly. When he uses his hook, his eyes glow red. Hook’s biggest fear is the crocodile that follows him everywhere. The crocodile once ate Hook’s hand and now wants the rest of him.
Next come the redskins, moving quietly through the forest. They are strong and painted with bright colors. At the front is Great Big Little Panther, carrying many trophies from past battles. At the back is Tiger Lily, their princess. She is proud and beautiful, leading her people with courage.
The animals are hungry tonight. Lions, tigers, and bears roam the island, looking for their next meal. At the end of the line comes the crocodile, moving silently. She is searching for her favorite snack – Hook.
The boys stop running and lie down near their secret home. «I wish Peter would come back,» they say nervously. Even Slightly, who always boasts, whispers, «I’m not scared of pirates, but I still want Peter to return.»
They hear a noise in the distance: the pirates’ song. In a flash, the boys disappear. They jump into tree holes that lead to their underground home.
The pirates arrive and find Nibs running through the woods. Starkey raises his pistol, but Hook grabs his arm. «Do you want to bring the redskins here with the noise?» Hook growls.
Smee asks, «Shall I catch him with Johnny Corkscrew?» (Johnny Corkscrew is Smee’s name for his knife.)
«Not yet,» Hook says. «I want all seven boys. Spread out and search!»
Soon, only Hook and Smee are left. Hook sits on a mushroom, feeling angry. «I hate Peter Pan,» he says. «He cut off my hand and fed it to the crocodile!»
Smee listens and nods. «But you’ve said the hook is better than a hand, Captain,» he reminds him.
Hook scowls. «That may be true, but the crocodile liked my hand so much it follows me everywhere. Luckily, it swallowed a clock, so I hear ticking before it comes.»
«What if the clock stops?» Smee asks.
Hook shivers. «That’s what I fear the most.»
Just then, smoke rises from the mushroom. Hook jumps up. «It’s a chimney!» he shouts.
The pirates realize the boys are hiding underground. Hook grins. «We’ll bake a big, sweet cake with green sugar and leave it by the mermaids’ lagoon. The boys will eat it and… they will die!»
Smee listened to Captain Hook’s plan with wide eyes.
«That’s the smartest and most wicked idea I’ve ever heard!» Smee said, clapping his hands. He began to sing. But before he could finish the song, a quiet sound stopped him.
At first, it was so soft it could have been a falling leaf. But then it grew louder.
«Tick, tick, tick, tick!»
Hook froze, his face pale. «The crocodile!» he whispered. He turned and ran as fast as he could, with Smee right behind him.
The crocodile slid through the trees, its jaws opening and closing, following Hook.
The lost boys came out of hiding, but soon, Nibs ran toward them.
«Help!» he cried. «Wolves are chasing me!» He fell to the ground, trembling.
The boys heard the wolves coming. Their howls were loud and scary.
«What can we do?» they asked.
Then they thought of Peter Pan. «Peter would look at them through his legs!»
«Yes, let’s do that!»
The boys bent down and looked at the wolves through their legs. It was such a strange sight that the wolves got scared. They dropped their tails and ran away.
Nibs stood up, staring at the sky.
«What is it?» Curly asked.
«I saw a big white bird,» Nibs said. «It’s flying this way, and it’s crying, „Poor Wendy! Poor Wendy!“»
«A bird?» Slightly said. «Maybe it’s a Wendy bird.»
«Look, there it is!» cried Curly.
Wendy was flying toward them, looking very tired. Her soft cries reached their ears. But they also heard another voice – it was Tinker Bell.
Tinker Bell flew around Wendy, pinching her and yelling.
«Hello, Tink!» the boys called.
Tink shouted, «Peter says to shoot the Wendy!»
The boys trusted Peter, so they believed Tinker Bell.
«Quick, grab bows and arrows!» they cried.
Tootles already had his bow. Tinker Bell pointed at Wendy and said, «Quick, Tootles! Peter will be happy!»
Tootles aimed his arrow at Wendy and fired. The arrow hit Wendy, and she fell to the ground.

What happens to the Neverland when Peter Pan is not there?
Why do the Lost Boys look through their legs at the wolves? What happens next?
What is Captain Hook’s biggest fear, and why?
How does Tinker Bell trick the Lost Boys, and what do they do because of it?
Why do the Lost Boys believe Tinker Bell when she says, «Peter says to shoot the Wendy,» and what happens because of this?

Chapter VI: The Little House
Tootles stood proudly over Wendy, thinking he had done something great. The other boys ran out of their hiding places with their weapons.
«You’re too late!» Tootles shouted. «I’ve shot the Wendy! Peter will be so happy with me!»
High above, Tinker Bell zipped around and yelled, «You fool!» before disappearing.
The boys gathered around Wendy. Silence fell. If her heart were beating, they would have heard it.
Slightly looked scared. «This isn’t a bird,» he said. «I think it’s… a lady.»
«A lady?» Tootles whispered, trembling.
«And we’ve killed her,» Nibs said, his voice shaking.
The boys all removed their hats and looked at the ground.
«Now I understand,» Curly said, lying on the ground in sorrow. «Peter brought her here for us!»
«She was going to take care of us,» one of the twins said. «And now she’s gone!»
Tootles took a step back. His face turned pale, but he stood tall. «I did it,» he said. «When I dreamed of ladies, I always said, „Pretty mother.“ But now that one came… I shot her.»
Tootles slowly began to walk away.
«Don’t leave!» the boys called, feeling sorry for him.
«I have to,» he said, his voice shaking. «I’m too scared of Peter.»
Then they heard a loud crow! It was Peter’s signal.
«Peter!» they gasped. «He’s coming!»
«Hide her!» they whispered, gathering around Wendy’s body. Only Tootles stood aside.
Peter landed in front of them with a cheerful grin. «Hello, boys!» he called.
The boys saluted him but said nothing.
Peter frowned. «What’s wrong? Why don’t you cheer? I have great news – I brought you a mother!»
The boys stayed quiet.
Peter looked confused. «Didn’t you see her? She came this way!»
Tootles stepped forward. «Peter, I’ll show you,» he said sadly.
The boys moved aside, and Peter saw Wendy lying still.
«She’s dead,» Peter said quietly. «Maybe she’s afraid of being dead?»
Peter looked like he wanted to run away, but then he saw the arrow in Wendy. He pulled it out.
«Whose arrow is this?» Peter asked sternly.
Tootles knelt. «It’s mine,» he admitted. «I’m ready for my punishment.»
Peter raised the arrow to strike, but his hand shook. «I can’t do it,» he said. «Something stops me.»
Nibs, meanwhile, noticed something. «Look!» he cried. «Her arm moved!»
They all turned to Wendy. Slowly, she lifted her arm.
«She’s alive!» Peter said.
The boys cheered. Peter knelt by Wendy and found the button she wore around her neck.
«This saved her!» he exclaimed. «It’s the kiss I gave her!»
Wendy’s eyes stayed closed, but from above, Tinker Bell began to cry.
«Why is Tink crying?» Peter asked.
The boys told him everything. Peter’s face turned serious.
«Tinker Bell,» he said, «I’m not your friend anymore. Go away!»
Tinker Bell flew to his shoulder, pleading with him. Finally, Peter softened. «Fine, not forever. Just for a week.»
The boys looked at Wendy.
«What do we do now?» one asked.
«We should carry her to our house,» Curly suggested.
«No!» Peter said. «We can’t just carry her. That’s not respectful.»
«But if she stays here, she’ll die,» Tootles said.
Peter thought for a moment. «Let’s build a little house around her!»
The boys cheered and ran to gather supplies.
John and Michael stumbled into the clearing, half asleep. They saw Peter and brightened. «Hello, Peter!»
Peter nodded at them but stayed focused. He was measuring Wendy with his feet. «We need the house to be big enough,» he muttered.
«Is Wendy asleep?» John asked.
«Yes,» Peter replied.
The boys worked quickly, bringing wood, branches, and leaves.
«What kind of house would she like?» one asked.
«She’s moving!» another boy cried.
Peter leaned in. «Wendy, tell us what kind of house you want!»
Without opening her eyes, Wendy began to sing softly:
«I’d like a little house,
The smallest ever seen,
With red walls and a roof
Of mossy green.»
The boys cheered. They found red sap for the walls and moss for the roof.
«What else?» they asked.
Wendy continued:
«With windows full of roses
And little babies peeping out.»
The boys pretended to grow roses and sang as they worked.
Finally, the house was done. Peter knocked on the door.
Everyone waited. Would Wendy answer?
The door opened, and Wendy stepped out. She looked surprised.
«Where am I?» she asked.
Slightly bowed. «We built this house for you, Wendy lady.»
«Say you like it!» Nibs begged.
«It’s lovely!» Wendy said, smiling.
The boys fell to their knees. «Be our mother!» they cried.
Wendy hesitated. «I’m only a little girl. I don’t know how to be a mother.»
Peter grinned. «You’ll be perfect!»
«All right,» Wendy said. «Come inside, children. I’ll tell you a story before bed.»
The boys cheered and squeezed into the tiny house. Wendy told them the story of Cinderella.
That night, Peter stood guard outside, his sword in hand. The little house glowed warmly in the dark. Even the wolves and pirates stayed away, as Peter stood tall, protecting the house with his whole heart.

Why did the boys think Wendy was «a mother» for them, and how did they feel when they thought she was gone?
What saved Wendy from the arrow, and why was it so special?
Why was Peter upset with Tinker Bell, and how did their friendship change by the end of the chapter?
What kind of house did Wendy describe in her song, and how did the boys make it?
Why did Peter stay outside the house at the end of the story, and how does this show his character?

Chapter VII: The Home Under the Ground
The Lost Boys had a secret home under the ground. It was hidden so well that even the pirates couldn’t find it.
«How do we get inside?» Wendy asked Peter.
«Through these trees,» Peter said, pointing to several large hollow trees. «Each tree has a hole. The boys slide down to the home below.»
«That sounds fun!» Michael said, his eyes shining.
«Let’s go!» Peter said. He grabbed the edge of one tree and disappeared inside.
The Lost Boys followed him, laughing as they slid down the tree trunks one by one. Wendy, John, and Michael were amazed as they watched.
«Come on, Wendy!» Peter called from below.
Wendy held her dress carefully as she climbed into one of the trees. She slid down slowly, feeling the cool wood against her hands. When she reached the bottom, she gasped.
The home under the ground was like a giant, cozy cave. There were beds made of moss and leaves, a table carved from wood, and little shelves holding cups and plates. Tinker Bell flew around, lighting up the room with her glow.
«It’s wonderful,» Wendy said.
«It’s perfect,» John added, looking at the wooden chairs and tiny windows.
«Do you like it?» Peter asked Wendy.
«It’s lovely,» Wendy said with a smile. «But where will I sleep?»
Peter pointed to a bed covered in soft blankets. «That’s for you,» he said.
«Thank you,» Wendy said. She walked over and touched the bed. It felt soft and warm.
As everyone settled in, the Lost Boys ran around, excited to show Wendy their home.
«Look, this is where we keep our treasures,» one boy said, opening a small chest full of shiny stones and feathers.
«And this is where we eat,» another boy said, pointing to the wooden table.
«You must eat your vegetables,» Wendy said gently.
The boys groaned. «Do we have to?» one of them asked.
«Yes,» Wendy said firmly. «Mothers always make sure their children eat healthy food.»
The boys laughed and nodded. «Alright, Mother,» they said together.
Peter climbed onto the table and clapped his hands. «It’s time for a story!» he announced.
The boys cheered and gathered around Wendy. Even Tinker Bell stopped flying and sat quietly on a shelf.
«Tell us a story, Wendy,» Peter said.
Wendy thought for a moment. Then she began to tell the story of Cinderella, a girl who lived with her mean stepmother and stepsisters.
«She wanted to go to the ball,» Wendy said, «but she didn’t have a dress. Then her fairy godmother came and helped her!»
The boys listened closely, their eyes wide. They loved hearing about the pumpkin carriage and the glass slippers.
«Did she live happily ever after?» one of the boys asked.
«Yes,» Wendy said with a smile. «She married the prince, and they were very happy.»
The boys clapped and cheered.
«That was a good story,» Peter said. «You’re a great storyteller, Wendy.»
«Thank you,» Wendy said. She looked at her brothers and saw that they were smiling too.
As the boys prepared for bed, Peter stood near the entrance of the cave, listening.
«What are you doing, Peter?» Wendy asked.
«I’m making sure the pirates aren’t nearby,» Peter said.
«Are they close?» John asked nervously.
«No,» Peter said. «But we have to stay alert. Captain Hook is always looking for us.»
Wendy walked over to Peter. «You should rest too,» she said.
Peter shook his head. «I don’t need to rest. I need to protect everyone.»
«You’re very brave, Peter,» Wendy said.
Peter grinned. «Of course I am. I’m Peter Pan!»
That night, everyone in the home under the ground fell asleep. The Lost Boys snuggled in their mossy beds, and John and Michael lay close together. Wendy sat awake for a little while, watching over them like a true mother.
She thought about their home in London, their parents, and the warm nursery they had left behind. But as she listened to the soft breathing of the boys and felt the magic of Neverland around her, she smiled.
«This is our new home,» she whispered to herself.
And with that, Wendy closed her eyes and fell asleep too.

Where is the secret home of the Lost Boys, and how do they get inside?
What did Wendy think of the home under the ground when she saw it?
Why did Wendy tell the boys to eat their vegetables, and how did they respond?
What story did Wendy tell the boys, and why did they like it so much?
Why did Peter Pan stay awake while everyone else was sleeping? What does this say about him?

Chapter VIII: The Mermaids’ Lagoon
One sunny afternoon, Peter and the children went to the Mermaid Lagoon. The lagoon was beautiful, with clear blue water and smooth, shiny rocks. Tall palm trees stood along the edge, and the sunlight sparkled on the waves.
«Look at the water!» Wendy said. «It’s so blue!»
«The mermaids live here,» Peter said proudly.
«Will we see them?» Michael asked, his eyes wide with excitement.
«Maybe,» Peter said. «They like to swim in the lagoon when the sun is out.»
The children sat on a large rock by the water. They looked around, hoping to see a mermaid. Suddenly, a soft splash broke the silence, and a mermaid’s head appeared above the water.
«There she is!» John whispered.
The mermaid had long, shiny hair and a tail that glittered like silver. She smiled at them before diving back under the water.
«She’s beautiful,» Wendy said softly.
More mermaids appeared, swimming and laughing in the lagoon. They splashed each other and played in the water like children.
«Do they talk?» Michael asked.
«Of course,» Peter said. «But they only talk to me.»
Peter jumped into the water and swam toward the mermaids. They greeted him happily, laughing and splashing him with their tails.
Wendy watched them from the rock. «I wish I could swim like that,» she said.
«You can try,» Peter called.
«No, thank you,» Wendy said. «I think I’ll stay here.»
The children spent the afternoon at the lagoon. Peter swam with the mermaids, and Michael played by the edge of the water, looking for shiny shells. John sat on a rock, drawing pictures in the sand.
Wendy noticed that the mermaids kept looking at her. They didn’t seem to like her very much.
«Why do they keep staring at me?» Wendy asked Peter when he returned.
«They’re jealous,» Peter said simply.
