В первой части настоящее пособие познакомит вас с несколькими сотнями англоязычных пословиц и поговорок, что позволит вам значительно расширить ваш кругозор и пополнить словарный запас.

Кроме этого (если, конечно, вы этого захотите), вы сможете дополнительно развлечься и потренироваться.

Дело в том, что после общего списка пословиц и поговорок вам предлагаются различные тесты и задания. В каких-то заданиях необходимо выбрать из предложенных слов то, которое на ваш взгляд было убрано из пословицы или поговорки. В каких-то заданиях (тестах) вам предлагаются два списка пословиц и поговорок (на английском и на русском языках) в случайном порядке, и вам предложено расставить их парами (англоязычный вариант – перевод). В каких-то заданиях вам предстоит расставить слова в пословицах в правильном порядке. В каких-то заданиях вам предстоит объяснение или толкование пословиц или поговорок, что бывает порой довольно трудно.

Таким образом, пособие реально развлечёт вас, обогатит ваш кругозор, увеличит ваш словарный запас, поможет развитию навыков перевода с английского на русский и поможет продвинуться в изучении (или преподавании) английского языка. Одним словом, развлекайтесь с пользой!

Необходимое предисловие

Вы, конечно же, знаете, что в английском языке (как и в большинстве других языков) существуют пословицы и поговорки. Они украшают нашу речь, делают её ярче, точнее и эмоциональнее.

В принципе, чем больше слов, выражений, идиом, пословиц и поговорок вы знаете, тем лучше. Но не забывайте, что носители языка не очень-то любят употреблять пословицы и поговорки при общении. Это не то чтобы считается дурным тоном, но многие полагают, что человек употребляет пословицы и поговорки потому, что сам не имеет

собственного суждения. Уж если вы хотите блеснуть знанием английского, то лучше использовать пословицу или поговорку в ситуации, когда она подкрепит вашу точку зрения, сделает ваше замечание или мнение более эмоциональным или более остроумным. А ещё лучше использовать пословицу или поговорку не в чистом виде, а в усечённом или в собственной "авторской" обработке. Есть хороший пример из литературы, где автор употребил идиому To let the cat out of the bag (Разболтать секрет, рассказать кому-то чужую тайну) со своим дополнением, которое придало идиоме юмористическую окраску. В изменённом варианте предложение звучало примерно так: She let the cat out of the bag with a lot of kittens. (Она разболтала секрет, добавив множество своих собственных подробностей). Из всего сказанного следует, что пословицы, конечно же, знать желательно, но часто употреблять их в речи необязательно.

Однако нельзя забывать и о том, что иногда вовремя и к месту сказанная пословица или поговорка может сыграть важную роль.

Кроме того, надо помнить о том, что не все пословицы и поговорки совпадают с русскими. Точнее, по смыслу они весьма сходны, а вот по форме (то есть по используемым словам) часто не совпадают.

Разберём, например, русскую поговорку И на солнце есть пятна в английском варианте она звучит Homer sometimes nods. Как мы видим, в данном случае, не совпадает всё, кроме значения (смысла).

Во-первых, в английском варианте нет слова солнце. Вместо него есть слово Гомер.

Во-вторых, в английском варианте отсутствует слово пятна, но имеется слово дремать.

В-третьих, в английском варианте имеется слово иногда.

Если переводить английский вариант дословно, то получается: Гомер иногда тоже дремлет. Имеется в виду, что даже великий Гомер иногда дремлет, то есть допускает слабость.

Итак, приглашаю вас в большое путешествие по миру полезных, умных и интересных мыслей, сентенций, советов, предостережений и наставлений.

Общий список англоязычных пословиц и их толкование

В этой части вы найдёте общий список пословиц с объяснениями. Пословицы и объяснения приведены на английском языке и в произвольном порядке. Когда вы будете знакомиться с этой частью, вы не только значительно расширите свой словарный запас, но и познакомитесь с множеством умных и полезных советов, наставлений и мыслей (а иногда и предостережений), заключённых в этих пословицах.

Кроме того, внимательное ознакомление с этой частью намного облегчит выполнение заданий (тестов) в других частях пособия, разумеется, если вы захотите выполнять эти задания.

Where there's a will there's a way.

When a person really wants to do something, he will find a way of doing it.

A bad experience or a horrifying incident may scar one's attitude or thinking for a lifetime.

He laughs best who laughs last.

A person who does his best is the one who will get the greatest satisfaction in the end.

Haste makes waste.

If one does things hastily he/she will make a lot of mistakes – he/she will need to spend a lot of time correcting those mistakes later.

It's no use crying over spilt milk.

It is pointless to feel remorseful over a thing lost that can never be found or a mistake done that can never be corrected or rectified.

Still waters run deep.

One who is usually silent and goes about his business quietly may be a very wise person.

Jack of all trades and master of none.

Is a person who can do almost anything, but he rarely excels in any of them.

Let bygones by bygones.

One should consider forgiving one's and forget all the bad deeds done by others.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

One should preferably avoid discussing issues that are likely to create trouble.

No news is good news.

When there is no news, it is likely that everything is all right.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

When a person is in great need of something, he will find a way of getting it.

Honesty is the best policy.

Being honest is believed to be the best route to take.

One man's meat is another man's poison.

No two persons are alike – every one has his own preferences, likes and dislikes.

Once bitten twice shy.

If a person has been tricked once he will more be careful and alert the next time.

Like father, like son, like mother, like daughter.

(It is used to describe a child's behavior when he or she acts like the father or mother)

Rome was not built in a day.

Any great plan or big dream cannot be achieved overnight or easily.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul.

(This is quoted when one takes another loan to pay off an earlier loan taking from one to give another.)

Spare the rod and spoil the child.

A child who is not punished and showed the error of his ways will become unruly.

Speech is silver, silence is golden.

Talk may be beneficial, but sometimes acquiescence may be the best option to take.

It takes two to make a quarrel.

Both parties in a quarrel should share the blame or take responsibility for it; no one can start a quarrel all by himself.

Strike while the iron is hot.

Seize a good opportunity as quickly as possible.

There's no smoke without fire.

Rumors do not spread unless there is some element of truth in them.

Time and tide wait for no one.

Time is precious, once it is past no one can go back and claim it thus everyone should be mindful of how his time is spent.

To err is human, to forgive divine.

It is only normal for man to make mistakes and do wrong, but for one to forgive another for his wrong is indeed great and gracious act.

In life there are some things once done or decisions once made cannot be changed; malicious words once uttered or harmful actions once done cannot be taken back.

Buy something without examining it for faults or checking to see if they are really getting what they believe they have purchased.

To stop a child from asking questions, talking, or making unnecessary noise.

It is used as an excuse to indulge in food and drink and spend money during the Christmas season.

(Don't) Cry over spilled (spilt) milk.

It's pointless to get upset or feel regret about a loss or mistake that can't be undone.

To warn people not to show too much interest in affairs that don't concern them.

When people are dissatisfied or angry, they sometimes react by doing foolish things that prove harmful to themselves.

If you cannot defeat an opponent or get him to change his ideas, plans or way of doing things, the best thing is to change your ideas, plans, etc.

If we decide to do something, we should commit ourselves to it boldly and completely.
