OMG, thought Rahul, maybe it is a … a portal!

‘Wait a moment …’ he said. ‘Where exactly are you from? What did you mean about not having toilets any more? About me looking like I’m in a history parade?’

‘Sorry, but I think I have to go,’ said the girl, preparing to dive into the toilet seat. ‘I don’t know how much longer the portal will stay open.’

‘Wait!’ said Rahul. ‘Pip!’

On hearing her name spoken for the first time – it was actually the first time Pip had heard her name said by someone outside her HouseUnit ever – she looked round.

She smiled at Rahul slightly sadly, as if to say: I’d love to, but I can’t. And then turned back to jump into the blackness.

At which point, a parrot came flying out of the toilet seat and hit her in the face.
