January

The very first day of the new year begins with some gentle energy, which may have us all feeling a little spaced out or ungrounded. The Moon is in Pisces, so for those of us who chose to spend New Year’s Eve on a retreat from the worldly bustle, this is the perfect time for contemplation and spiritual practice, such as deep meditation and Yoga, and for setting clear intentions for the year ahead. For those of us who parted company with 2019 at a party, it may mean we take longer than usual to recover. Whatever you are doing, be kind to yourself and recoup your energy, which will return full flow when Mars switches sign on 3rd January.

Signs in the Spotlight

Capricorn (also its opposite sign, Cancer, to a lesser degree, until the Full Moon in Cancer on 10th January).
Aquarius (also its opposite sign, Leo, to a lesser degree).
Pisces (also its opposite sign, Virgo, to a lesser degree).
Sagittarius (also its opposite sign, Gemini, to a lesser degree).
Scorpio and its opposite sign, Taurus, equally.

Intentions

If you didn’t conjure up an adequately inspiring New Year’s resolution list, work on a new one now and release any fears under the Full Moon on 10th January instead – the Full Moon is such a powerful time for purification!

Mars has been in the deep, penetrating sign of Scorpio since November 2019. This is a perfect combination for tenacity on one level and attracting soul mates on another. It’s also a time for deepening existing relationships with those who bring out the very best in us, for it’s all about chemistry and attraction that goes way beyond the physical. However, whilst Scorpio energy ‘gone right’ is forgiving, empathetic and extremely powerful, when things aren’t going well it’s prone to be stuck in the past and playing the blame game. Avoid this trait and set an intention to love yourself and release anything that causes you pain. Self-love is a far cry from narcissism; it’s a gentle inner confidence that knows you are already good enough, and are, indeed, the most powerful player in your life, with the potential to transform any area or trait that you no longer wish to work with.

Reflect, Re-energize

The planets’ combinations are pushing us to be serious and driven this month and will offer support to those of us who have solid goals. However, this is matched in power with serious amounts of air and fire, which energize and inspire.

Overall, it’s vital for our well-being that we give ourselves regular breaks and take some time off to reflect on anything we need to leave behind. Our energy will be revived by the ‘Great Mother’ (nature) when Mars moves into adventure-loving Sagittarius on 3rd January. After that, we will be energized by feeding our mind with higher knowledge and becoming more philosophical. Taking walks, surfing waves or hopping on bikes to reconnect with the elements will also reboot our energy and shoot arrows of inspiration our way.

The Aquarian influence this year is eclectic, accelerated and, at times, wild, and so to avoid burnout we must take time out from busy schedules. Our New Year vows should include being kind to ourselves and spending time with people and animals who heal and nourish our soul.

Revolution Brings Opportunity

Uranus, the planet that sparks revolution and change, has been in a retrograde motion (appearing to go backwards) since August last year, but finally goes direct in Taurus on 11th January. This will enable us to actualize the ideas that have been percolating away for some time; it also pushes us to become more aware of our resources and our body, and how we care for them. Pushing ourselves to extremes is not wise; finding ways to nourish mind, body and soul will set us up to achieve total soul contentment. Roll out your Yoga mat at home or in the office, plan your own class or find a fab teacher online; whatever you do, truly embrace this new year as one in which to find your balance.

This is actually a year that will give us the opportunities to achieve our wildest dreams, but with all the Capricorn vibes at the start of this month – and throughout most of the year, thanks to Saturn and Jupiter – they won’t come easily if we haven’t worked for them.

If we are prepared to face our shortcomings and put the work in, however, January will allow us to sow seeds that, with care and patience, will flourish just like the stunning biodynamic vineyards producing the finest grapes, all cultivated via the phases of the Moon.

Empowerment

The Sun shines in a sign for almost one month, magnifying and empowering the energy of that sign. Capricorn energy is magnified until 20th January and then the Sun moves on to empower Aquarius. For now, though, Capricorn energy impacts us all collectively, and the effect is even more powerful for those of us with Capricorn as our Sun sign, Moon sign, rising sign (first house), or any other major ‘stamp’, or its opposite sign, Cancer.

This discerning yet ambitious vibe will affect us all and so we need to make sure we channel the ‘gone right’ vibe: committed, reliable and über-wise. The alternative is not very attractive: megalomania, ruthlessness and a calculating approach; think politics gone wrong. Avoid political contests and just remember that hard work and steadfastness always pay off – in one lifetime or another!

For those of you with major stamps in Capricorn (and Cancer, to a lesser degree), this month will enable you to make wise moves, taking the greater goal into consideration, and to impress those in authority – or maybe you’ll just impress yourself. With all of the activity in Capricorn, you will no doubt be reviewing changes you wish to make. These may be work-related, personal or spiritual, but try not to be too hard on yourself – another Capricorn trait you own. Accept where you are and know that this year is all about waking up and taking your rightful place as a warrior in a time starred for immense transformation.

Spiritual practice is a must if you are to capitalize on the star movements and chart the territories smoothly.

For you, Capricorn, having Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto and the Sun in your sign is very empowering, but also way too much pressure. So, relax, lighten up and embrace your mantra.

Capricorn’s mantra: I am enough.

Wednesday 1st January–Sunday 5th January

Forecast

This week begins with Pisces Moon energy possibly causing us to float away with our dreams. In order to gain the most from the astrology this week, and beyond, it’s vital that we immerse ourselves in nature and give ourselves some head space. By the time Mars moves from brooding Scorpio into Sagittarius on 3rd January, we should be feeling ready to shake off the holiday season’s lethargy and crack on with goals and activities that inspire us.

Certain aspects square to Pluto push us to open our minds or the minds of others and change the way we perceive certain areas of our lives. And, because it’s directly connected to the fixed sign of Taurus, it’s better to adopt a patient, gently tenacious approach if we wish to succeed. Taurus energy responds well to a pragmatic attitude, and if you have to handle challenging issues or folk, focus on planting seeds slowly and then letting go of the need to see immediate results.

If it’s you that is fixed, then you need to be more patient with yourself; this life is like a drop in the ocean, but one that still causes ripples, and even the smallest step towards a goal or change will undoubtedly get results.

Mission

Ten minutes of morning meditation each day. You may use an app or any other tool to assist you; however, the real goal here is to just sit quietly with your mind and make friends with it. Set an alarm for ten minutes (or more if you wish) and try to always sit in the same place at the same time with your sitting position well aligned. Try not to move, and when a thought comes (and they do!), don’t chase it, just accept it and let it go and then return to deep breaths. In life we often make moves to chase pleasure and avert suffering. When we train the mind to remain unmoved, it’s a serious game-changer, as the mind creates our reality.

In Swedish, Meraki is the word that defines anything that you create with all of your heart and pure soul. Direct Meraki into all that you do this week. Inject your heart, soul and creativity into simple tasks and projects.

Aspiration/mantra: Patience.

Reflections …

If you managed to complete this week’s mission, how did it make you feel?

If you skipped on anything, did you feel any different?

Did you notice whether the Moon phases or Mars’ shift make you do anything differently or feel different?

How did the week’s aspiration unfold? Did it help you to cultivate patience or become aware of when you, or another, lacked in it?

List a few things, or even just one, that you are grateful for. This is a powerful indicator to the universe that you are aware of its blessings.

Monday 6th January–Sunday 12th January

Forecast

This week we have a major Full Moon impacting us and also a lunar eclipse in the sign of Cancer, which is doubly powerful as the Moon is the ruler of Cancer. Cancer is all about emotions and how we feel in general. Back in old England, citing lunacy for crimes committed under a Full Moon was a strong defence, and people who lost their minds were branded ‘lunatics’. Now the Moon’s phases are known to cause a gravitational pull upon large bodies of water, and humans are comprised of around 65 per cent water, so it stands to reason that the Full Moon is going to impact us mortals as well as the tides. Given that we have this knowledge, let’s hold it together and use our wisdom to transform any explosive energy into calmness and tolerance. Don’t get sucked into reacting when others do. Take three deep breaths and pump compassion into the planet. If we all do this under the Full Moon, we will steady the Earth’s vibrations, vanquish demons and win many karmic points this month. I like winning and I’m a team player, so let’s do this collectively. It’s all about the ‘om’ – chant it, calm down and focus on compassion …

Uranus breaks out of its retrograde funk this week and starts working for us again, which is rather marvellous, and it aligns with the sign of Taurus, the latter being Mother Earth’s official guardian, so if we take our carbon footprint into account and tone down our consumeristic ways, then Uranus, as the god of the skies, and his mythic wife, Gaia, will stand by us and bestow many blessings.

Mission

In addition to ten minutes of morning meditation, prepare for the emotional impact of the Full Moon by reteasing stagnant energy with simple Yoga moves:

Sit cross-legged on the floor with a straight back and place your hands gently on your knees.

Ground yourself with the floor and gently extend your spine as you inhale. Imagine light flooding through the crown of your head.

With your eyes closed, take deep breaths through your nose and fill your lungs with oxygen. Pause and hold your breath for a few seconds.

Slowly exhale all of the air from your lungs through your nose, creating a gentle ‘oceanic’ sound in the back of your throat.

Repeat this practice for two to three minutes.

Aspiration/mantra: Let it go!

Full Moon in Cancer (19.21)

The Full Moon is the time to release and let go of any habits, people or situations that don’t serve our hearts, minds or higher purpose. Also, this Full Moon is what’s known as an ‘Appulse’ eclipse, when the Moon is obscured by the Earth’s shadow. It is this lack of light that, perhaps, awakens us and allows us to recognize our own shadow side. I believe that there is no more powerful time to face our demons and, in doing so, release them to the light.

In days gone by, when we were all God-fearing people, eclipses were seen as bad omens. They are extremely powerful and, for this reason, monks in many Buddhist monasteries in the East take vows of silence at this time, believing that the karma is magnified under the Full Moon; they pray and meditate for world peace.

Write down all of the aspects of yourself, or your life, that you wish to release, such as ‘I want to release: my anxiety, my aversion to fitness, toxic relationships’. You can ask the Moon Goddess to help you to surrender, release and move on!

Burn your list (safely) under the magnificent force of the Full Moon. Ask for help from the unseen forces; have faith, trust that all is well and know that there is an underlying plan.

This will be a double impact, as the Moon governs the sign of Cancer. Watch out for people overreacting today; stay calm, calm others and breathe deeply. You have the power to transform this energy into empathy, affinity and great kindness. Because you have the knowledge!

Uranus goes direct in Taurus.

Sunday 12th January

Saturn forms an exact conjunction to Pluto in Capricorn today, causing an extraordinary energy surge for us all. You may feel the need to reassess your goals and commitments in life, but this surge is more geared towards Capricorn and, to a lesser degree, Scorpio. Both planets trigger the need for profound transformation and rebirth. To be able to do this smoothly, forgive, forget and find new ways to operate.

Mercury moves into Aquarius this week, ushering in powerful, high-vibrational and exhilarating energy.

The best use of the week is to align with the higher mind, as Aquarius is working steadfastly for the shift in consciousness, sending sacred wisdom to remind us of who we really are. These cosmic downloads lift us out of a purely worldly existence and help us to realign with the collective consciousness and, indeed, our true selves. Busy minds cannot capture the above, though. When your phone’s memory or computer’s hard drive is full, it simply cannot receive or retain any new information, and it’s the same with your mind. So, if you wish to attune to, hear, feel and use the knowledge provided by Aquarius, spend time alone, meditate daily and do not get caught up in trivia. Although the week is likely to be busy and brimming with exciting opportunities, allow yourself some freedom from the rat race and time to be quiet.

Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, is flowing forwards and because it’s in the earth sign Taurus we need to steady its electric flashes and keep our feet on the ground. I’ve said this before, but daily meditation and Yoga, or perhaps Qi Gong, will protect you and keep you in tune with your mind, body and soul. Uranus is the master of the unexpected and likes to send surprises that invigorate and cause shocks of electric energy. Being steady will protect you and help you enjoy the opportunities for learning that the week ahead will provide.

In addition, Venus moves into Pisces, which is a sensitive, gentle and mellow sign at its best. Pisces ‘gone right’ sees clearly, avoids toxins, including alcohol, and stays present in the wonder of the moment. So this can be an amazing week for creative expression. To avoid Virgo ‘gone wrong’, which potentially impacts at the beginning of the week and heightens anxiety, a total clear-out is advised. Prepare for the week ahead as much as you possibly can and, on a practical level, arrange your work and home space in order to ‘feel’ organized. Go through paperwork, pay bills and recycle. Venus shifting into Pisces on Monday lightens up the Virgo vibe, but it’s prudent to heed the above before allowing Pisces ‘gone right’ to flood the senses with feel-good juices: play music, make art, manage the mind with meditation and Yoga, and go with the flow of life.

Mission

In addition to ten minutes of morning meditation, it’s important to detoxify, to prepare and open your mind to receive, so try to avoid alcohol or any other mind-altering substances for the next week and sleep without interference. If you have a busy family life, maybe recruit the family and ask them to support you as you find new ways to better manage everyday life. If you do include them, ask them to add their own reflections to your journal. If the children are little, simply ask them how they feel afterwards and how they dream. His Holiness the Dalai Lama once said, ‘If every eight-year-old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation.’

Our subconscious often works through our conscious mind and through dreams, so keep your mind clear to create space. At bedtime for the next five days at least (seven if you can!), enact the following ritual and create your own safe and sacred sleeping space:
