The Art of Aikido: Theory and Practice. Manual for instructors
This principle is implemented in the technical performances that exist in aikido. At the same time, this principle is implemented through a student’s understanding of all his or her abilities, limitations, and abilities. The more a student learns about himself or herself, the more opportunities he or she has to feel this center. The emphasis on self-reflection is to ask students what they can and cannot do, and to pay attention to their individuality.
– Chūshin-sen (jap. — central line). This term is also used in Kendo martial art.
The central line of a person runs from the top of the head, straight down the body, dividing it equally into half. In the world and in the universe, everyone has a central line, and all movement is made through that line. In aikido, the idea of Chushin-sen is that instead of «holding the line» and defending ourselves by leaning on one point, we move from the line of attack to a more advantageous position. Unlike karate, for example, where one person attacks and another person responds by «standing still,» blocking the attack (throwing it off the path) and counterattacking from the same place.
