The paragraphs below the illustration described gargoyles as beings of the night—beings that were doomed to spend eternity guarding castles and holy places. Their fate was punishment for sins committed during another lifetime. They were grotesque creatures that shunned the daylight with such vehemence that they became stone beneath the sun’s rays.
