– I’m Peter. What can I get you?
– Do you have any kind of fish?
– Sure, we do. Did you ask «Any kind of fish»? It’s probably simpler to say what kind of fish we don’t have here.
– Ah, I see, do you have cod?
– Of course. You didn’t even have to ask.
– You know, a friend of mine from San Antonio once treated me with some fried cod. He would take a large fish, cut it along the spine in two and fried those big pieces which were about twenty centimeters long. Do you think you could cook the cod that way?
– Certainly, no problem. We can cook cod that way. What kind of garnish would you like with it, sir?
– Hmm, I’m not sure. French fries maybe? How your cook decides it would be nice.
– What about first course?
– For the first course… I don’t know either. What have you got?
– We’ve got very good fish solyanka with sturgeon and salmon.
– Ah, sounds good, I’ll go for that one, yes!
– A salad?
– Do you have Greek salad?
– Certainly.
– May I also have some Armenian brandy, fifty grams?
– OK, for dessert?
– I would really fancy a sponge-cake.
– I see. What kind of cake? Napoleon or a brownie? Or a cream puff?
– No, no. I would prefer a summer pudding with strawberry or cranberry. You’ve got summer pudding, haven’t you?
– Yes.
– And I would like a big cup of black tea with lemon.
– Any fruit?
– Let’s make it one big dark red colored apple. Aren’t they called Chinese or something like that? Oh yes, and four tangerines, please.
– Anything else?
– No, I think that will be enough, thanks.
– I’ll bring you the fruit and the salad now, but the other dishes will be ready a bit later.
– Thank you!
– I’m Peter. So, what can I get for you?
– Might you happen to have any fish, per chance?
– Did you say «any kind of fish»? Why, of course we do! It would probably be simpler to say what kind of fish we don’t have here.
– Even cod?
– You must be joking! Why, of course we have cod! That goes without saying!
– You know, a friend of mine from San Antonio treated me to some fried cod not too long ago. He would often take a large fish, cut it along the spine into two 20 cm or so pieces each and then fry them. It was, so to speak, cod side, for lack of a better word. Could you, perhaps, prepare it that way?
– Certainly! That would be no problem at all! We also prepare cod that way as well. Which garnish would you like to accompany your cod and for your side dish as well, sir?
– I don’t know….hmmm.. I suppose that any old garnish will do but for a side, I think that maybe French fries will suffice. Better yet, I’ll tell you what! Why don’t you surprise me and let your cook decide for us both instead.
– And for the first course, sir?
– For the first course… well, I don’t know. I suppose that I still need more time to consider it.
– Well, I can say that we just so happen to have very good solyanka with sturgeon and salmon.
– Yes! That sounds absolutely splendid! I think that I will have that then!
– A salad?
– Do you, by chance, have Greek salad?
– Of course! It happens to be one of our most sought after salads that we offer! Anything to drink?
– Armenian brandy, fifty grams.
– And, lastly, for dessert?
– Your fanciest cake! I mean, a sponge-cake.
– I understand. That is kind of a napoleon, is it not? Or perhaps a brownie or a cream puff, even?
– I’m afraid not, sir.
– As of now, we only offer summer pudding with strawberry or cranberry.
– Do you have summer pudding available to order?
– No question.
– Great! And a large black tea with lemon, preferably in a mug.
– Would you like any fruit in addition to that?
– A large red apple, please. If I’m not mistaken, I believe that it’s called Chinese apple.
– OK, very well, sir! Will that be all?
– And four tangerines, please.
– Does that complete your order?
– Not yet!
– There’s more?! Very well, sir. Tell me what else you would like whenever you’re ready! Better yet, I’ll bring you your fruit and salad while you’re deciding on what else you would like and I can serve you the rest a bit later, if that works for you.
that only goes without saying!
…for lack of a better word – другого слова не нахожу
better yet – а еще лучше…

Commentaries:
– Good evening. Are you ready to order?
– Yes. You don’t have pasta NAVY stile in the menu here unfortunately. Can I order it? I am in the NAVY, on a submarine, now enjoying a vacation. I miss marine food.
– No problem. How do you want the minced meat: beef or beef and pork?
– I don’t know how our cook used to make it.
– It’s done both ways. But to make it perfectly, it should be beef plus one fifth of pork.
– Tell him to make it that way.
– Good. Borsch NAVY stile?
– Yes, please.
– For your spouse?
– The same. We have similar tastes.
– Anything to drink?
– A hundred grams of Armenian brandy and a bottle of Chianti. It’s Italian wine, have you got it?
– No question. It was Italian long ago. Now it’s international. But our Chianti is from Italy. Any salad?
– Yes, please, you can improvise.
– For dessert?
– Ice-cream, full cream. One portion with strawberry syrup, the other with chocolate chips.
– Coffee, tea?
– Black Ceylon tea and black Turkish coffee.
– Anything else?
– No, that’s all, I think.
– Sandwiches with brandy: caviar or salmon?
– Oh, yes! One with black caviar, the other with red.
– Sugar or chocolates with coffee and tea?
– Chocolates.
– In five minutes I’ll bring you brandy, wine, lemon, chocolates, sandwiches and salads. The rest will come a bit later.
– Good evening. Are you ready to order?
– Hi, I noticed that you don’t seem to have any pasta navy style on the menu. Is that something that I wouldn’t be able to order or do you think that you guys might be able to help me out with here? I’m actually a sailor on a submarine but on vacation now. I just so happen to miss marine food.
– That shouldn’t be a problem, I would think. Would you prefer pork or beef for your minced meat, sir?
– I can’t seem to remember how our cook used to make it, to be honest with you.
– It’s done both ways but the authentic recipe calls for almost all beef plus one fifth of pork.
– That sounds good. I think that I’ll go with that then.
– Very well. And navy style pasta, correct?
– Yes, please.
– And for your spouse?
– She’ll have the same as well, please.
– And to drink?
– I’d like Armenian brandy and a bottle of Chianti, Italian, please.
– Chianti is international now but all of our Chianti is from Italy though. Would you both like salads?
– Yes, please. House salads are fine.
– Very well.
– after some time……
– Will you be having dessert this evening?
– I’d like ice-cream and not frozen yogurt or low fat, please. One portion with strawberry syrup, the other with chocolate chips.
– Coffee, tea?
– Black Ceylon tea and Turkish coffee, please
– Anything else?
– No, I think that that should just about cover it.
– Any sugar or chocolates with your coffee and tea?
– Chocolates, please.
– Alright! Sounds good. I will be bringing your dessert out to you both shortly here, OK?
– Thank you!
– You’re most welcome!

– Good evening. What are you going to order?
– Stake, maybe.
– Natural or minced?
– Natural.
– Burnt to a crisp, medium or bloody?
– Medium.
– French fries, a little bit of sauerkraut for garnish?
– Yes, and add some green peas.
– Wine, brandy?
– No, thanks. Fanta «Grapes» with ice.
– Salad?
– Yes. Summer salad. Cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, spring onion, radish, dill, sunflower oil… Can you do it that way?
– We’ve got that kind of salad, it’s called «summer», only it’s with olive oil.
– Even better. The vegetables here are nitrates-free, aren’t they?
– Yes, of course. The vegetables come here from a former assistant professor of one of local universities. He bought a tumbledown double-story house on a piece of wasteland, reconstructed it, fenced it, made a greenhouse, and began to produce top-quality vegetables for restaurants. He’s well off. We visit him sometimes.
– So you don’t check the vegetables?
– We do check them, every batch of vegetables. We have our own lab.
– Oh!
– Any soup?
– Borsch-soup, not much.
– Half a portion?
– Yes, please.
– Coffee, tea?
– Black Ceylon tea with lemon.
– For dessert?
– Chocolate waffle cake.
– Fruit?
– A banana.
– Anything else?
– Some fish…
– We have a very good jellied pike-perch.
– Oh yes, please!
– Anything else?
– No, that’s it, I think, thanks. Yes, that’s it.
– I’ll bring it in a few minutes.
– Good evening. What would you like to order?
– I’ll go with a steak.
– And how would you like that to be done?
– Medium, please.
– And for your side?
– What are my options?
– Mashed or fries for your starch or a side of rice.
– Fries, please.
– And would you like a salad or a vegetable?
– Green peas, please, but I’d like a salad too.
– Very well.
– And to drink?
– Grape pop, if you have it, and I’d also like black coffee too, please.
– A summer salad, please, with cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, green onions, radish, dill, and sunflower oil. Can you make it that way?
– That’s exactly what a summer salad is except that it comes with olive oil instead of sunflower oil.
– Great! Do you happen to know if the vegetables here are nitrate-free or not?
– They’re all nitrate free here. We actually get all of our vegetables from a former assistant professor from one of the agricultural departments here. He grows the best quality vegetables in the area.
– Do you still go ahead and check all of the vegetables yourselves?
– We check every batch of vegetables before we send any food out to the customer.
– Wow!
– Any soup?
– Borsch but not that much though.
– Is half a portion alright?
– Yes, please.
– Anything else?
– Some fish…
– We have a very good jellied pike-perch.
– Oh yes, please!
– Anything else?
– No, that’s it, I think, thanks. Yes, that’s it.
– I’ll bring it in a few minutes here for you then, alright?
– Thank you!
– You’re welcome!
Some time later…
– Your coffee, sir. What would you like for your dessert, sir?
– Chocolate cake, please.
– Would you like any fruit to go along with that?
– A banana.

Commentaries:
– Good morning. Can we rent a car?
– Sure. No problem. We’re glad to help you. Which brand would you want and where are you heading?
– To San Francisco. There are four of us: my wife, two kids and me. We would like something really comfortable.
– San Francisco… From New York it’s about 3000 miles. I would recommend you Chevy Cruise. The model is designed specially for long-distance trips. AC, smooth running, cruise control, sunroof, low level of noise, very good specifications. The back seat converts into two berths. A very capacious trunk. This car is very reliable.
– Chevy Cruise… Can I have a look at it?
– Oh yes, this is it. Please, get in behind the wheel.
– Well, it’s very comfortable. Plenty of room. May I start the engine?
– Of course.
– Practically I don’t hear the engine working. Fantastic! What is the power of the engine?
– This car has 115 horse power internal combustion engine. That car over there in the corner has 120 horse-power diesel.
– I don’t like diesel, runs like a tractor. What is the fuel rate of this car?
– 1.8 gallon on highway and 2.5 in town.
– Now the main thing. What is the price for all this?
– Forty dollars a day, mileage included.
– Does that mean, that even if my mileage is over 1000 miles it will still all cost forty bucks a day?
– Quite right, sir.
– Then, let’s accomplish.
– Are we formalizing this car?
– Yes, this one. Is the insurance included or it goes separately?
– Included. Will you please sign the document?
– So quickly? Great! And… One more question. We are planning to come back by plane. Where can we surrender the car back in San Francisco?
– 362 Douglass Drive. The list of our branch offices is on page 3 of the agreement.
– Thanks.
– Have a good trip!
– Hello. We’d like to rent a car.
– Hello. Sure, that’s no problem. Let’s see if we might have something that you’d be interested in. What did you guys have in mind?
– My family and I are planning on taking a road trip to San Francisco. There’ll be four of us in all and we’d like to have something really spacious.
– It’s roughly something like 3,000 miles or so from San Francisco to New York. A Chevy Cruise might be what you’re looking for since it’s specifically designed for long-distance trips and has all of the amenities that drivers ask for like AC, cruise control, sunroof, power windows, reclinable seats, is great on gas, and is pretty much loaded right from the factory. The back seat folds down into two separate sleeping compartments. The trunk is spacious and it’s a very reliable car, overall.
